Artist Events in August and September

The artwork of Alta Whitlock will be on display at the Rancho San Diego Library throughout the month of August. Join us for an artist reception Saturday, August 22nd, from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.!

In the month of September you can view the works of four, outstanding, local artists. Award winning artists Betsy Brown, Edward Juarez, Jennifer Meeder, and Monique Straub will present an eclectic mix of original works in oil, watercolor, pastel and mixed media. These bold and colorful works will include landscapes, still life, floral, and abstract collage.

Armchair Impressionists Exhibition

December 1- 31, 2008

The Armchair Impressionists, including Jeffrey Graham, Rustin Holec, David Lawhead, Karen Marsh, and William Marsh, will feature their paintings December 1 – 31, 2008 at the Rancho San Diego Library, 11555 Via Rancho San Diego; El Cajon, CA. Please join them at the Artist’s Reception, December 7th from 2 – 4 pm in the Community Room.

The Armchair Impressionists are five artists who came together while students of artist Jack Jordan when he taught at Grossmont College. The group meets to offer support and encouragement as they submit their paintings to the various venues available to artists in and around San Diego County.

Anime/Manga Club. Each week we discuss topics in Anime/Manga, watch old and new episodes of Anime, and practice drawing characters. Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.

Chess Club. Play in the tournament or just practice with your friends. Thursdays, 3:30-5 p.m.

Axis and Allies Club. Take either side and control your country to victory in this board game based on World War II. Now also featuring D-Day! Some Fridays, 3:30 – 4:45 pm.

2008 Rancho San Diego Library Poetry Contest

Sponsored by the Friends of the Rancho San Diego Library

Contest Rules
1. The contest is open to all residents of San Diego County. Members of the San Diego County Library staff are not eligible to enter.

2. All works must be original, not previously published, and suitable for public display. Plagiarism is automatic grounds for disqualification.

3. Poems may be no more than one page in length and must be typed or printed legibly.

4. Each contestant may submit no more than two poems. Poems must be submitted on separate pages, with a completed entry form attached to each page. Please do not put your name on the page containing the poem.

5. The Friend of the Rancho San Diego Library will provide prizes to be awarded in each of the following categories: Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, 3rd through 5th Grade, Middle School (Grades 6-8), High School (Grades 9-12), and Adult.

6. Each entry form submitted by a contestant under the age of 18 must include the signature of his or her parent or legal guardian giving permission for public display of the poem.

7. The decisions of the judges shall be final.

8. Entries will become property of the library and will not be returned. Please make a personal copy before submitting your poem. Submitted poems will be collected in a notebook that will become part of the Library's collection.

9. Entries must be submitted in person to the Rancho San Diego Library. The deadline for submission is 6:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2, 2008.

10. Winner will be announced later in the month. Prizes will be awarded and winning poems will be read at the celebration of the sixth anniversary of the opening of the Rancho San Diego Library on Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 pm. Contestants do not need to be present to win.

Davka, The Survival of a People - Join us for a multimedia exhibit of photographs, video, and audiotaped oral histories that illuminate the path from the Holocaust to survival through the stories and testimony of 10 families, the majority from San Diego. The focus is not a retelling of the Holocaust, but on what happened to the survivors themselves and their families once they survived.

Join Dr. Jim Soules and the Senior Theater of San Diego for good theatre and therapeutic humor. Former Dean of Palomar College, Soules produces and directs musical comedies and TV shows. Soules' current production is "Helen of Troy", based on Homer's Iliad, a great epic of wounded honor and vengeance.
We will also hold the Summer Reading Program Grand Prize Raffle.

Adult Summer Reading has begun, and we already have over 100 readers signed up! Don't get left out, sign up today!
What is required for Summer Sleuthing? All you have to do is read 5 books (audio books count, too!) by July 31st... Along the way, you will receive these prizes:
- 2 books: Wallet-sized magnifier
- 4 books: Power clip (Magnetic, great for the fridge)
- 5 books: Travel coffee mug
